Save on Costs With a Prescription Drug Plan

Without drug coverage, Medicare prescription costs can be steep and unpredictable. Original Medicare (Part A and Part B) does not include prescription drug coverage (Medicare Part D), so a standalone drug plan can help with this.

You’re eligible for a Medicare drug plan after you’ve enrolled in Original Medicare. The first enrollment period for Part D is the Initial Enrollment Period (IEP). That’s a seven-month window that includes:

  • Three months before you turn 65
  • The month you turn 65
  • Three months after you turn 65

During this time, you can apply for Part D coverage along with Medicare Part A and Part B. Even if you are not taking prescription drugs, it is best to enroll in Part D as soon as you’re eligible to avoid a penalty.

You can still add Part D coverage after your IEP. You can also make changes to your plan, including adding coverage, during the Annual Enrollment Period from October 15 through December 7 each year.

Some Part D plans have deductibles and some don’t. A deductible is what you pay out of pocket before your plan starts covering drug costs. The Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services (CMS) sets the limit for how much a deductible can be each year.

Blue Rx has a plan with a $0 deductible option. This plan also has the largest drug list of our standalone plans. Explore Part D plans and benefits in your area.

Prescription drug plans have five drug tiers (although some have six). Generic drugs typically make up the lowest and least expensive tiers. Every Part D plan has a formulary, or drug list, that shows all the drugs the plan covers, and separates them into tiered levels based on cost.

You can use our search tool to enter the drugs you take and see which plans cover them. The search tool also factors in monthly premiums, so you’ll have an estimate of what you’ll pay.
